I’m 6′3” with long arms and legs, agile, able to flip and kick high. I feel natural with kick boxing or mui tai but I have scoliosis so I want to limit the strain I put on my back. What martial art should I develop?

I am 15 years old and I live in a tough neighborood. My parents think that it would be a good thing for me to learn how to defend myself. What is the martial art that would be perfect for a slim 5′9″ girl? Are there other girls with martial arts training who could tell me?

I want to get involved in martial arts primarily to learn the art and learn self-defense. Getting in shape and discipline will be side bonuses but they’re not why I want to learn a martial art.

I am really interested in Bagua, but there aren’t any teacher where I live. I want a martial art that can let me hold my own in fights, but that’s not the primary reason for learning it. I want something more to come out of it, if you understand that. I like Bagua because of it’s evasive manuevers, and the ability to dodge attacks. I’m open to any suggestions. Oh by the way, I’m 13 years old and about 5′0. Thank you guys.

I’m curious because Samurai are traditionally depicted wearing very cumbersome body armor which would rule out fast martial arts like karate. I assume that they must have been taught kendo, but what about a hand-to-hand martial art?

I’m looking for a martial art with effective striking moves only, not dancing and other artistic stuff.
For those that go on the ground I’m going with bjj or sambo.
