I mean in terms of professional artists. Nearly every one of the well-known artists have been formally educated in art, and self-taught artists even today appear to be almost shunned.

The only reason this sticks out is because it’s nothing like that in similar fields…? I mean, people are acclaimed as musical geniuses without having ever stepped foot in a conservatory. People like Tolstoy and Dickens aren’t naturally expected to have studied Literature at an education institute. So why does art school almost seem like an indisputable requirement for visual artists?

I’m looking into colleges now and i’m stumped as where to find an ‘artsy’ school that isn’t an art school. I’m still between psychology and art/photography as a major so i want a school with an artsy feel on campus and a good art program, but a good psych program as well. This has posed as quite difficult. If anyone has any suggestions i would love to hear them. (Oh and i’m looking in the northeast/mid-atlantic areas.) Thanks a lot!

I live in Michigan and cannot relocate. the only school I think here is the Art Institutes in Novi (detroit) I have read mixed reviews and this location opened last year. I don’t really have a choice as far as schools since this is the only one. I guess I just would like opinions. Has anyone attended any of the locations? What did /didn’t you like about them? Thanks in advance!

I really want to get into a good art school with good oppertunities in all types of art. What credits would I need to get into a good art school? And also, what are some of the best art colleges?
