How did the art of the Middle Ages reflect the social concerns of the time period?
I am doing a project on the art of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and one of the parts is writing a one page essay about the art of the Middle Ages. I already wrote about its features, I just don’t know how it reflects the social concerns of this time period. Thanks.

The art from the middle ages is all very gloomy and sad showing hoe they were not optimistic socially but the Renaissance is brought and happy showing the opposite, see more at

contrary to your prior answerer, the art of the middle ages was not ‘gloomy and sad’; it was simply mostly religion-based. that is, based on the stories of christianity. in some cases that may have included ‘last judgment’ scenes, which are somewhat depressing, but also show the chance of salvation (so hopeful), but also included many other bible scenes. they also often showed everyday activities, such as people at work, in different fields, carpentry, farming, etc. and zodiacal or calendar type imagery, like a modern almanac. this was partly also religion-based so that people knew when to celebrate religious holidays.
